사서가 활약하는 내용의 영화 11편 (미국 허핑턴 포스트 기사)

대중매체에서 보여지는 직업 이미지는 그 영향력이 꽤 크다. 그래서 대체로 직업군들은 대중매체에서 자신들을 어떻게 인식하고 그려내는가에 대해서 무관심할 수는 없을 것이다. 이왕이면 좋은 이미지로 그려지면 좋겠지요. 도서관이나 사서에 대해서는 어떨까? 다른 직업에 비해 많이 다루어지는지, 그렇지 않은지는 잘 모르겠지만, 그래도 심심하지는 않을 정도로 대중매체에서 도서관이나 사서를 다루고 있다. 글쎄 긍정적인 이미지로 그려진 적이 있었는가? 아니면 너무 심하게 부정적으로 그려졌던 적은 있었는가? 잘 기억나지 않는다.. (이래서야 이거 내 직업에 대한 애정이 있다고 할 수 있을까? ^_^) 아무튼 대체로 사서는 도서관 안에서 조용하게 그러면서도 좀 고집스러운 모습.. 무엇보다도 대부분 여자다. 뭐 현실과 크게 다른 것 같지는 않지만, 그럼에도 자주 대중매체에서 어떤 고정적인 이미지로 보여진다면 자칫 현실에서도 그런 이미지로 보여질 수 있기 때문에 대중매체에 담겨지는 이미지에 대해서 관심을 가질 필요는 있을 것이다. 물론 실제 대중매체에서 도서관이나 사서는 다양한 이미지로 보여질 것이다. 모든 것을 다 보지는 못할테니 결국 자신이 본 것 안에서만 유효한 어떤 이미지를 우리는 알고 있는 것이겠지만, 그러나 그것이 전체인 것처럼 생각하는 것은 어쩔 수 없지 않을까.. 그러다보니 직업군 전체 입장에서는 가능한 한 모든 경우를 확인해 볼 필요는 있을 것이다. 아무튼 대중매체에서 도서관이나 사서를 주인공이나 주요 장소 등으로 다루는 것에 대해서 늘 관심을 가지고 지켜보고 분석하고 필요하다면 적절하게 대응할 필요가 있을 것이다.

이번에 미국 허핑턴 포스트에서 '도서관인이 활약하는 영화 11편'을 선정해서 보도했다. 이 기사는 우리나라에서도 주목을 받았고, 트위터 등에서 사서나 관심있는 사람들에 의해 자주 언급되었다. 언제 기회가 되면 이 기사에서 제시한 11편 영화를 한 번 다 보고 사서들끼리 이런저런 이야기를 나누어봐도 좋겠다는 생각을 해 본다. 곧 그런 기회가 있을 것이라 기대해 본다. 그런데 그 11편 영화 중에는 내가 본 것이몇 편없다.. 이런 목록을 선정하는 것은 선정하는 사람 나름의 기준이 있으니 그대로 인정하되, 정말 제목을 기억했다가 구해 봐야겠다. 전창호 사서는 이미 수 년 전에 영화와 드라마, 광고등 대중매체 속에서 도서관/사서를 다룬 것들을 정리한 바 있다. Parker Posey stars as 24 year old Mary, a girl whose illegal party gets her thrown into jail. She calls her librarian godmother to bail her out. She begins working at the library herself to repay her grandmother. While she loathes the experience at first, the job changes her life.

"National Treasure" (2004)

Nicholas Cage stars as treasure hunter Ben Gates in this 2004 action flick. Seeking a treasure the founding fathers buried, he enlists the help of Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger), the curator of the National Archives.

"Desk Set" (1957)

This 1957 romantic comedy stars Katherine Hepburn as a librarian in the Reference Department at a TV station. When Spencer Tracey becomes the new supervisor, the librarians get angry and the sparks start to fly

"Foul Play" (1978)

Gloria Mundy (Goldie Hawn) is a San Fransisco librarian who gets tangled up in solving a murder.

"Storm Center" (1956)

Bette Davis stars as Alicia Hull, small town librarian. When Hull refuses to remove "The Communist Dream" from shelves, she herself is branded as a communist.

"Miranda" (2002)

This 2002 movie stars John Simm as a librarian who begins a love affair with a woman who walks into the library (Christina Ricci). Following her after she goes missing, he discovers that she actually has three personalities.

"Peeping Tom" (1960)

When Mark Lewis was a child, his father took videos of the fear on his face. Later in life Mark becomes a compulsive murderer on a mission to make a d0cumentary about fear. He shows these videos to his downstairs neighbor, librarian Helen Stephens.

"The Station Agent" (2003)

A man born with dwarfism moves to New Jersey after the death of his best friend. There, he becomes friends with a hot dog vendor and Emily, a divorced librarian (played by Michelle Williams).

"The Librarian: Quest for the Spear" (2004)

Noah Wylie stars as Flynn Carson, a librarian who enlists the help of a martial-arts specialist (Sonya Walger) to recover a stolen artifact from his library.
